Expansion of Swisscom’s HSPA network

November 2, 2015

Swisscom, Switzerland's leading telecoms company, is planning to expand its mobile data network, and it is estimated that the company will have invested tens of millions of francs in its mobile broadband network by the middle of 2016.

Starting in the middle of November, Swisscom will upgrade its wireless data network with HSPA high speed packet access (HSPA) technology. Once this upgrade is complete, it is anticipated that customers will be able to access the Internet at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps for downloads, and 1.4 Mbps for uploads.

Swisscom supplies 45% of the Swiss population with HSPA at the moment. By the end of the year, Swisscom aims to expand its HSPA coverage to 70% of the people in the country.

From mid-2016, the company intends that HSPA technology will be available on the company’s entire UMTS network, which currently covers 90% of the population.
